Daphne Art Foundation announces the return of its Soil Painting Workshop with artist and educator Sandra S.K. Amoabeng on Saturday, June 12, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Casa Daphne. Following the enthusiastic response to the May 1 workshop, this second session offers an additional opportunity for community members to engage with the artist’s unique material practice and explore creative connections to the local landscape.

Amoabeng is a Ghanaian artist whose practice explores land, memory, and belonging through painting and site-specific installations using natural materials. She currently serves as a Visiting Instructional Assistant Professor at Texas A&M International University.

Through this hands-on workshop, Amoabeng invites the community “to celebrate our bond with Laredo by painting with its earth.” Participants will learn how to transform local soil into paint while exploring texture, mark-making, and creative processes inspired by place, memory, and personal connection.

No prior experience is required for participants, and all materials will be provided. The workshop is open to all ages. Registration is $30 for adults and $15 for children ages 12 and under. Space is limited, and participants may reserve a spot by scanning the QR code provided or visiting https://www.daphneart.org/events/a-distant-familiar-in-person-workshop-june-6-2026  Casa Daphne is located at 1420 Washington Street.

The workshop is presented in conjunction with Amoabeng’s solo exhibition, A Distant Familiar, currently on view at Casa Daphne. Bringing together soil, architecture, plant life, and sensory elements gathered in Laredo, the installation reflects on the experience of recognizing familiarity across distant places and how a sense of home can emerge through landscape, material, and memory.
