Daphne Art Foundation will host a Soil Painting Workshop led by artist and educator Sandra S.K. Amoabeng o Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Casa Daphne.

Amoabeng is a Ghanaian artist whose practice explores land, memory, and belonging through painting and site-specific installations using natural materials. She currently serves as a Visiting Instructional Assistant Professor at Texas A&M International University.

Amoabeng invites the community “to celebrate our bond with Laredo by painting with its earth.” Participants will learn to transform local soil into paint while experimenting with texture and mark-making techniques.

No prior experience is required, and all materials will be provided. The workshop is open to all ages. Registration is $30 for adults and $15 for children ages 12 and under. Space is limited, and interested participants may reserve spots by scanning the QR code provided or by visiting https://www.daphneart.org/events/a-distant-familiar-in-person-workshop.

Amoabeng’s solo exhibition, A Distant Familiar, is on view at Casa Daphne through June 12. Her installation brings together soil, architecture, plant life, and sensory elements collected in Laredo. Her work reflects the experience of recognizing familiarity across distant places and how a sense of home emerges through memory, material, and lived experience. The exhibition is open to visitors during the workshop, by appointment, and during gallery hours on Thursdays from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
