AHEC’s Dr. Julie Bazan has been recognized with the 2026 Presidential Excellence Award by the board of directors of UT Health San Antonio for strengthening the institution’s mission in education, research, clinical care, and community engagement. She is among this year’s distinguished honorees celebrated for exceptional contributions to health education, workforce development, and community wellbeing across South Texas.
The Award represents one of UT Health San Antonio’s highest institutional honors, acknowledging individuals whose service and leadership create lasting impact. An April 14 ceremony at the San Antonio Botanical Garden brought together leaders, faculty, staff, and regional partners to highlight achievements that advance health equity and strengthen the future of healthcare in the region.
Dr. Bazan was recognized for her visionary leadership in expanding educational pathways for students pursuing health careers, fostering binational and regional collaborations, and championing programs that address mental health, workforce shortages, and access to care in underserved communities. Under her direction, AHEC has broadened its reach, offering innovative programs that empower youth, support families, and build a culturally responsive healthcare pipeline.
In presenting the award, UT Health leaders Taylor Eighmy, PhD, President, UT San Antonio, and Francisco G. Cigarroa, MD,Senior Executive Vice President for Health Affairs and Health System, emphasized Dr. Bazan’s commitment to service, collaboration, and student success. They noted that her work exemplifies the values of the Presidential Excellence Awards and reflects a deep dedication to improving health outcomes throughout South Texas.
