The City of Laredo Utilities Department is currently investigating reports of an unusual taste and odor in the drinking water in certain areas of the city. (Those areas were not identified in the City’s press release.)
The City assures the public that there is no health risk associated with the water, and that It remains safe to drink and use.
The City’s water treatment plants continue to operate within normal parameters, and disinfectant levels are fully compliant with state and federal regulations. In response to community concerns, recent water quality testing — including testing for bacteria such as E. coli — has returned negative results, confirming that the water is not contaminated.
Preliminary Findings:
The taste and odor concerns are likely linked to seasonal environmental factors, specifically elevated temperatures that can lead to the natural production of compounds such as geosmin. These compounds, while entirely harmless, can cause a noticeable earthy or musty taste and smell, even at extremely low concentrations.
Response Measures:
The Utilities Department has implemented the following measures out of an abundance of caution:
- Comprehensive flushing of the water distribution system in affected areas
- Collection of additional water samples and testing through independent laboratories
- Ongoing monitoring of water quality system-wide to ensure continued compliance and safety
What Residents Should Know:
- This is an aesthetic issue, not a health hazard.
- Boiling the water is not necessary and may intensify the taste and odor.
- Residents with concerns or questions are encouraged to call 311 for more information.
The City of Laredo appreciates the community’s patience as the Utilities Department continues to investigate and address the matter. Additional updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
