To meet the growing need for a diversely trained community, Laredo College will begin offering an Associate of Applied Science in Forensic Science Technology this fall. For anyone interested in joining this valuable and exciting career field, an information session will be held Wednesday, June 11 at 4 p.m.

The session will take place at the historic Ft. McIntosh Campus in Memorial Hall 136, with staff available to provide additional information. Students interested in the Forensic Science Technology Program will receive details needed to help them decide on courses in time for the fall semester. Information about sister programs, Criminal Justice, and Homeland Security Studies, will also be available.

According to Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director Manuel Maciel, the Associate of Applied Science in Forensic Science Technology Program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, practices, and technologies applied in forensic science.

“Our mission is to equip students with the knowledge and technical skills required to excel in forensic investigations and contribute effectively to the criminal justice system,” he said. “Job prospects within this field range from crime scene technicians to police officers and investigators.”

During the information session, visitors will learn more about what to expect in classes from LC staff members and get a glimpse into the wide world of forensic science.

“This program is the first of its kind to prepare students for careers that support law enforcement functions such as crime scene collection and property and evidence handling. It provides another academic path apart from the traditional criminal justice degree,” Maciel said.

He added that the program’s course schedule will follow an eight-week model, with morning, face-to-face classes and an online component. Everyone is encouraged to attend and take a leap toward an exciting new career in the field of forensics.
