Laredo Film Society will host cinematographer/director Nicolas Lewis for a “Lighting for Film: Foundations” Workshop on Saturday, April 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. at LFS HQ, 510 San Agustine Ave., Suite B

The workshop is part of a series of events focusing on the entire production process, also known as principal photography. In this course, attendees will learn to create mood and drama through light.

“Lighting for Film: Foundations” is a hands-on experience designed for aspiring filmmakers — from set designers and cinematographers to gaffers and directors. Topics include the lighting essentials of direction, quality, color, intensity, and shape. Engaging lectures and practical exercises will educate participants on setting up and manipulating light sources. The immersive workshop offers insights into camera composition to bring visual storytelling to life.

Lewis has over a decade of multimedia storytelling expertise in commercials and narrative filmmaking. As an accomplished director and cinematographer, he has helmed a variety of short films and created award‑winning documentaries — most recently Across, which garnered top honors on the festival circuit. He also produces commercial content for higher‑education institutions and crafts intimate biographical films spotlighting Texas Tech students and alumni.

Lewis is a self‑taught filmmaker who began his career in Austin as a camera assistant. He has worked his way up to directing projects across narrative and documentary formats. In this workshop, he will draw on his own experiences, breaking down the technical and creative principles that bring film to life.
