LAREDO, TX – Representatives from GreenLatinos, Earthjustice, and Earthworks, alongside Laredo Council District 8 Member Alyssa Cigarroa, will headline a Saturday press conference to elevate local border environmental issues on a broader national platform.
The Laredo Encuentro, organized by the Rio Grande International Study Center (RGISC) and GreenLatinos, will tell a different story of the border and provide guardians of the land a shared space to honor the vital forces of nature and proclaim that the border IS beautiful.
“The press conference will set a tone of hope and renewal for our daylong Earth Day celebration,” said RGISC advocacy campaigns manager Edgar Villasenor. “The Rio Grande symbolizes our bicultural identity, inspiration, and shared history.”
Rogelio “Rojo” Meixueiro, Dallas-based Texas community advocate with GreenLatinos, added: “We are proud to host an Encuentro that uplifts the river’s cultural, spiritual, and ecological power.”
“It’s now more important than ever to celebrate and uplift the diverse border communities, culture, and ecosystems that make the borderlands so special,” said DC-based Earthjustice Associate Legislative Representative Cameron Walkup. “As President Trump, Congressional Republicans, and Governor Abbott ramp up efforts to build more disastrous border wall, Earthjustice stands in solidarity with communities here in Laredo and across the borderlands in saying no to border wall construction.”
