Laredoans are invited to the dedication ceremony of the Albert Ochoa Memorial Baseball Field on Tuesday, December 3, at 1900 Plum Street.
The ceremony honors Coach Albert Richard Ochoa’s legacy and celebrates his many contributions to the community, in particular his character-building impact on the numerous Laredo students who benefited from his guidance as an educator and a coach.
Known as Laredo’s “Coach de Oro,” Ochoa was born June 10, 1917, and died on September 16, 1998. He was a 1937 graduate of Laredo High School, where he played football and ran track. He attended Sul Ross University where he also played football from 1938 to 1940.
During World War II, he served five years in the 17th Airborne Division and completed his military service with the Legendary 101st Screaming Eagles Artillery Airborne Division.
Ochoa coached at both Martin High School and J.W. Nixon High School.
In recognition of many years of service to the community, the City of Laredo and the Laredo Independent School District dedicated the Albert R. Ochoa Memorial Field in 1989.
He was a 1983 inductee of the Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame. His district-winning 1952 Martin High School Baseball Team was inducted into the Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.
The City of Laredo and Dist. 4 Council member Albert Torres invite the public to the event, which begins at 9:30 a.m.
