The Laredo Theater Guild International (LTGI) will present its production of Steve Martin’s Picasso at the Lapin Agile – an absurdist comedy that places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian café in 1904 – January 16 through January 26, 2025 at the Laredo College Shoebox Theater (Main Campus, T-30.)
Vernon Carroll directs the production, and Henry Mejia is its producer.
The play features Alejandro Escobedo as Albert Einstein and Benjamin Hinojosa as Pablo Picasso. Cast members include Victor Serna, John Maxstadt, Stephanie Solis, Allyson Tellez, José A. Flores, Raul Ramos, Lucia Santa Anna, Victoria Hernandez, and Benjamin Lule.
From the LTGI website: “Einstein and Picasso meet just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism. In his first comedy for the stage, the popular actor and screenwriter plays fast and loose with fact, fame, and fortune as the two geniuses muse on the century’s achievements and prospects and other fanciful topics with infectious dizziness. Bystanders, including Picasso’ agent, the bartender and his mistress, Picasso’s date, an elderly philosopher, Charles Dabernow Schmendimen, and an idiot inventor introduce additional flourishes of humor. The final surprise patron to join the merriment at the Lapin Agile is a charismatic dark-haired singer time warped in from a later era.”
The Cabaret Au Lapin Agile, (the Nimble Rabbit Cabaret), is a famous Parisian landmark that dates back to its 1863 establishment as Au rendez-vous des voleurs, meaning “Where the Thieves Meet.”
Beautiful. I will plan to attend.
