Food Town Laredo, TX Symposium: focus on City’s culinary culture and growing food tourism

Food Town Laredo, TX, A Symposium on Laredo’s Culinary Culture, is set for Thurs., Oct. 17 at TAMIU’s Academic Innovation Center Auditorium 128.

The symposium will showcase Laredo’s rich culinary heritage and the value of close collaborations between chefs and local food producers. As a city with a flourishing food scene, Laredo is poised to grow its food tourism industry, expanding the economy while strengthening and building a more efficient local food system.

Native Laredoan and Executive Chef at Ocho in San Antonio’s Hotel Havana, Jesse Kuykendall, will deliver keynote remarks at the opening of the event.

Award winning podcaster and food historian Maite Gomez-Rejón, also a native Laredoan, will speak about the region’s culinary heritage and lead the panel discussion alongside well known local chefs and area food producers to discuss Laredo’s culinary culture.

Laredo chefs who will be part of the Laredo Food Town panel are Maita Fernandez (Lolitas Bistro), Bobby Gonzalez (El Capataz and La Tabernilla), and Janet Zapata (550 Pizzeria.)

Two local food producers – Marcella Juárez of Palo Blanco Farm & Ranch and Servando Leal of Cross Country Meats, LLC – are also part of the panel.

he event, which is sponsored by City Makery, IBC, Gateway Community Center, and Plazas of Laredo, begins at 6 p.m. and concludes at 8 p.m. There is no admission fee.
