The last opinion piece by the former City Council member Alfonso Casso proclaimed “America dodged a bullet and a civil war through God’s divine intervention!”
America has not dodged enough bullets in the last 30 years. America averages 40,000 to 50,000 gunshot casualties every year. The writer thinks that God Himself deflected the shooters’ aim. The public has not been shown convincing evidence that the most famous convicted felon in America was actually hit by a bullet. We have not been shown official medical reports to verify the circumstances of his alleged ”wound.”
By informing us that had God not intervened, he may have been seriously injured or killed, he fails to enlighten us as to which God saved his hero. Was it Zeus? Odin? Zoroaster? It couldn’t have been the God of the Old Testament, since He specifically mentioned what He thought of adulterers, liars, and thieves. Where was God’s divine intervention at Uvalde Elementary? During the Holocaust? During the hundreds of years of slavery? During the annihilation of millions of Native Americans?
It is obvious that the writer is well read and loves to quote from ancient and recent philosophers. It is amazing that 10 people can read one book and come up with 10 different interpretations. Two intelligent people can read the Bible from cover to cover several times. One will become a lifelong Christian Nationalist and the other will become a lifelong atheist. By quoting Nietzsche, one of my favorite German philosophers, the writer overlooked the glaring fact that he was an ardent atheist, coining the famous line ‘God is Dead’ in one of his many works. He was also the inspiration for Hitler and Mussolini in their quest for fascism. A bit coincidental? Another German he alluded to was Schopenhauer. He was also an atheist, questioning the existence of the Christian God, and preferring the peaceful philosophy of Buddhism. Both men were confirmed bachelors all their lives and couldn’t have lasting relationships with women. Whether that affected their view of humanity is best left to historians.
There is no question Trump is declining mentally on a daily basis. At his las rally he praised the murderous Russian dictator Putin for the hostage release. President Biden and VP Harris were not mentioned or thanked. He also mentioned his favorite fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter. Sound normal? You decide. He accused VP Harris of “turning black “recently. Judging from his photographs of long ago, when did he decide to turn orange? He appears incapable of having a normal conversation or interview without playing an imaginary accordion with his hands.
I have always admired the former Council member’s anti-establishment rants for the past few decades. I don’t know the writer’s profession but I am delighted he felt it necessary to mention mine. I am a proud lawyer and defender of The Bill of Rights for almost 50 years. People know I’m not afraid to call out government abuses and tinpot tyrants at every level. The writer accuses me of vituperative attacks on the sociopathic convicted felon. I must admit to having turned to my dusty dictionary to learn I was being “bitter and abusive” towards his idol. If you watched him attack the Black journalists on stage July 31, that is his M.O. with all intelligent women interviewers, especially women of color. He calls them “mean and nasty” instead of answering direct questions.
This is who you want on a world stage, representing the USA? If all politics is local, as he loves to remind us in each letter, am I only insulting 38% of the Webb County Republicans who voted for Trump? Will he kindly rebut my argument that six of the Supreme Court justices are MAGA cultists? Will he as a non-lawyer give us his learned interpretation of the horrendous opinion granting one criminal defendant complete immunity for “official” criminal acts while in office? The writer accuses the “political left” of slander (truth is a defense) trying to bankrupt him (he did that to himself six times before running for office) impeached twice (for proven high crimes but acquitted by spineless Republican toadies, who feared for their political future if they dared to convict and remove the traitorous criminal.) He has already been convicted on 34 felonies by a jury of his peers, not by any mysterious leftist conspiracy. He has three pending felony trials in the near future. Only the presiding judge in each of those cases can jail him if the facts deem it necessary.
The writer’s main beef with me can be summarized as follows: Quit reminding the general public that the convicted felon is a convicted felon. His rabid supporters couldn’t care less about his conviction. Yesterday I spotted a pickup truck flying two enormous flags. One was the US flag. The other read Vote for the Convicted Felon 2024. Trump has now made all convicted felons respectable in the public eye. Now they can challenge all current laws barring them from top security jobs, serving on juries, or running for high office. They can now challenge prosecutors in future trials from impeaching their testimony because they have felony convictions on their record.
The master of Schadenfreude accuses me of the same trait because I dared to remind readers of Trump’s conviction. As a defense lawyer, I get no joy at any one convicted at trial with no evidence, but in Trump’s case, I have been warning you of this con artist for over nine years. The writer forgets how gleefully he attacked my good friend Henry and his wife for their legal problems. Good when he does it, bad when anyone else does.
The ex-councilman feels that my opinions insult half the people in the United States. In order to appease the writer’s feelings, I bring up the British Parliamentarian Disraeli when he announced that half of the Cabinet were “asses.” The Speaker immediately demanded a retraction or face a reprimand. Disraeli quickly retorted “Mr. Speaker, I withdraw. Half the Cabinet are not asses.”
