News anchor and proud Laredo College alumnus Ruben Villarreal has joined LC as the new Public Information Officer/Television and Podcast Productions Director.
Villarreal brings decades of knowledge in communication and media to the college district. He has 30 years of professional experience as a broadcaster, producer, TV anchor, digital broadcaster, radio host, operations manager, public speaker and master of ceremonies. Before joining LC, he was an anchor and producer at the local Gray Television affiliate station KGNS.
“Being a part of the LC family is thrilling. So many amazing things are happening here for our students and for the Laredo community. As for my role, I’m honored to represent LC and will work hard to live up to the motto of ‘Igniting Excellence.’ I want to push myself to be the best at everything I do for Laredo College because LC deserves the best,” Villarreal said.
Like many Laredo professionals and community leaders, Villarreal’s academic journey began at Laredo College, then-Laredo Junior College (LJC), in 1987. He completed his core curriculum before transferring to St. Edward’s University in Austin, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a Minor in Political Science.
His passion for communication was evident in the articles he authored for The McIntosh Express while a student at LJC.
“I enjoyed my time at Laredo College because I was able to start my education while working and living at home. Being a student at LC taught me the skills I needed to continue my education elsewhere,” the experienced communicator said.
Returning to his alma mater, walking around the historic Ft. McIntosh Campus and reminiscing about his time here in the 1980s, Villarreal said it still feels surreal to work here now. He said he feels blessed and extremely grateful for the opportunity to work at LC.
He said he looks forward looks forward to his role as PIO and official spokesperson for the college. As TV/Podcast Director, he will be tasked with the programming that airs on LCTV, the college station currently seen on Spectrum channel 1301. One of his goals is to add podcasts in the near future.
“As PIO, I want to ensure that the community knows that LC has so many opportunities for everyone. Many already know because our entire team does such a great job at making sure the community knows about LC, and I want to do my part,” Villarreal said.
“I would like to move the TV and podcast productions to the next level and make sure the content is accessible for everyone to see. We also plan to stream LCTV everywhere, which will be a main focus.”
On a personal level, Villarreal’s main drive is his faith and his children. He wants them to be proud of him and find success and happiness in everything they do.
“God has been my guide and my strength throughout my career. I’m nothing without Him, and I’m so grateful for all the blessings he has bestowed upon me. I love my four children and want to be the best father I can be. I want to be a role model for them even though they’re not little children anymore.”
