Luncheon to recognize Sen. Zaffirini, first woman Dean of the Texas Senate

The Laredo City Council and Mayor Victor Treviño will host a recognition luncheon honoring State Senator Judith Zaffirini on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, for the distinguished appointment as Dean of the Texas Senate.

Senator Zaffirini was named the first woman Dean of the Senate in the history of the State of Texas on Dec. 31, 2023. The noon luncheon in her honor will be held at La Posada Hotel’s San Agustin Ballroom.

Senator Zaffirini is the first Mexican American woman elected to the Texas Senate and has served since 1987. She has represented District 21 since 1987 and was re-elected in 2022 in an eleventh-landslide victory.

A native Laredoan, Zaffirini is a descendant of the City’s founder, Don Tomás Sánchez. She has passed a record-breaking 1,388 bills, more than any legislator in Texas history and maintains a career-long perfect voting record, having cast 72,132 consecutive votes as of 2023.

An educator and businesswoman, she is an award-winning Communication Specialist. She earned B.S., M.A., and PhD degrees from The University of Texas at Austin. She is president of the Alexander Foundation and its entities, including Alexander Investments and Alexander Development.

Judith and Carlos Zaffirini Sr. have one son, Carlos Jr.; daughter by marriage, Audrey; and two grandsons, Asher Maxwell (6) and George William (4).
