Texas A&M International University and the City of Laredo are hosting 150 geographers from New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana for the Nov. 1 – 4 Southwestern Division of the American Association of Geographers (SWAG) Conference Nov. 1 to 4 at La Posada Hotel.
The SWAG conference is the largest post-Pandemic assembly to present on various multidisciplinary topics, including “Mapping Violence and Social Movements,” “Bracing for and Forging Ahead with Climate Change,” “Borders and Social Justice Struggles,” “Human-Environmental Systems,” “Land and Life in Nepal,” “People, Place and Environment in the Lone Star State,” and cultural and urban geographies.
The Conference is co-chaired by TAMIU faculty members, Dr. Andrew Hilburn, SWAG Chair and TAMIU Associate Professor of Geography, and Dr. Alison Hadley, TAMIU Assistant Professor of Anthropology.
The Conference provides an opportunity for the presentation of various sessions, student presentations, poster displays and a Keynote Luncheon featuring Dr. Gary Langham, Executive Director of the American Association of Geographers and former Chief Scientist for the Audubon Society.
Attendees will also enjoy a reception at the Border Heritage Museum, a BBQ Dinner and Awards, the Caminarte Art Walk in downtown Laredo, a field trip to Guillermo Benavides’ El Corazon Ranch and Solar Farm, and a SWAAG Geobowl.
