The Webb County Domestic Violence Coalition and the Mid Rio Grande Border Area Health Education Center will host the 27th Annual Domestic Violence Conference on Thursday, October 5 at Texas A&M International University.
The conference, which begins at 8:30 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m., will offer a platform for dialogue and education on domestic violence and raising awareness of available resources. The event is a crucial opportunity for professionals, advocates, and the community to unite and exchange ideas to combat domestic violence.
The day will commence with opening remarks from notable community figures, including Sr. Rosemary Welsh, Dr. Julie Bazan, Sr. María Luisa Vera, and Judge Oscar Liendo. A presentation of colors by the Webb County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard opens the conference.
Elizabeth “Liz” Wiggins, a legal advocate from the Texas Advocacy Project, will share her insights on “Sexting and Cyberbullying: Redefining Dating Violence and the Legal Remedies for Teens.” Wiggins, who has a rich background in law and brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the conference, is deeply committed to providing legal aid to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking.
Following a brief break, Norma Rodriguez will discuss “Stopping Adult Abuse is Everyone’s Business.” Rodriguez, an experienced Faith Based Community Engagement Specialist and former investigator with Adult Protective Services, holds a Master’s in Social Work. Her commitment to protecting vulnerable adults and the elderly makes her session invaluable for attendees seeking to make a difference.
After a scheduled lunch and awards ceremony, Krista Del Gallo will delve into an update from the “88th Texas Legislative Session.” As the Legislative Director at the Texas Council on Family Violence, Del Gallo is dedicated to promoting laws and policies that expand safety nets for survivors of family violence, making her contribution vital for those aiming to stay ahead in the legislative landscape.
Closing the individual presentations, Dr. Susana Rivera will address “The Silent Reality of Domestic Violence Among Children and Adolescents: From Witness to Victim.” A prominent figure in mental health, Dr. Rivera’s extensive experience and specialization in treating child traumatic stress promise to shed light on the pressing issue of domestic violence among youth.
As the day nears its end, all speakers will unite for a comprehensive panel discussion moderated by Sr. Rosemary Welsh, bringing their combined expertise to the table in “Domestic Violence – Beyond the Physical Violence.”
The conference will close with remarks from Isidro “Chilo” Alaniz, Webb County District Attorney, marking the end of an enriching day dedicated to combating domestic violence in all its forms.
The Webb County Domestic Violence Coalition conference offers legal, mental health, and law enforcement professionals, advocates, and community members to be part of a meaningful dialogue that promises not only insight and understanding, but also practical solutions to tackle the many faces of domestic violence.
