“On the Edge, Al Borde,” a multimedia art exhibition featuring the work of eight local artists, opens with a reception Thursday, June 8 at the Martha Fenstermaker Memorial Visual Arts Gallery.

Maritza Bautista, executive director of the Daphne Foundation, will present a curator lecture at 5:30 p.m.

According to Bautista, the exhibit – which features the work of Alexander Barron, Alejandro Cortinas, Genesis Victoria Hernandez, Kassandra Romero, Homero Salazar, Raul Seca Jr., Gabriela Treviño, and Martha Viera – “The title of the exhibit reflects the themes and styles the artists chose to work with, which are edgy and reflective of contemporary art practices they push themselves to explore.”

The exhibition showcases over 30 works in a variety of media, including oil, gouache, acrylic paintings, installation, digital and prints, video and photos.

“There is currently a surge of young artists shaping the culture of Laredo with photography, video, guerilla style art installations, and plein-air artmaking. They are reimagining and creating new spaces of art, all while captivating audiences with their murals and street art. It’s really inspiring,” Bautista said.

The exhibit runs through Aug. 4. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Admission is free and open to the public. The Martha Fenstermaker Memorial Visual Arts Gallery is in the Visual and Performing Arts Building on the Ft. McIntosh Campus.

The Laredo College Visual and Performing Arts Department is continuously showcasing and fostering appreciation for the arts and culture in the community.
