The Webb County Heritage Foundation is hosting a free daylong event open to the public to celebrate the 268th birthday of Laredo. The Founders’ Day Celebration takes place on Saturday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. in historic downtown Laredo.
Activities will begin at 9 a.m. with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Monument to the Founders on San Agustin Plaza, followed by a special Mass to commemorate the founding of Laredo at 10 a.m. at San Agustin Cathedral. After that, live music, food vendors, arts and crafts vendors, yoga, and Laredo Heritage Lotería will take place on the Plaza until 5 p.m.
The Celebration will continue from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Border Heritage Museum at 810 Zaragoza St. with more music, food, and screenings of promotional videos about Laredo and its history. “The Living Mural” will be unveiled at the parking lot wall of the Border Heritage Museum at 7:30 p.m.
Additional partners participating in the Founders Day Celebration will be the Villa San Agustin de Laredo Genealogical Society with a display of family trees in the American Legion Commander’s Room, the Granaderos y Damas de Gálvez, the Laredo Cultural District and the Webb County Historical Commission with a historical exhibit at Casa Ortiz, the American Legion, La Posada Hotel, Los Olvidados, El Mesón and El Mesón On Wheels, Livi’s Mexicue, House of Whiskey, and Main Street’s Farmers Market at the Outlet Shoppes.
Individual commercial businesses will be featuring a “Fundadores Special” in their various locations.
The Founders’ Day Celebration is meant to bring awareness of the community’s rich local history while providing a day of entertainment and enjoyment of downtown historic sites.
