On Wednesday, March 29, the Rio Grande International Study Center (RGISC) will host the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas, in partnership with COMMISSION SHIFT, for two separate trailblazing events.

The first is a media event at 11:00 a.m. at the Inner City Park at 202 W. Plum St. to uplift the voices of the Carrizo/Comecrudo Youth Walkers as they visit Laredo on their 600+ mile march from the Permian Basin to the Gulf Coast, fighting against the destruction of their sacred land.

The second is a community forum at 6:00 p.m.at Casa Ortiz, 915 Zaragoza St. The forum is open to the public and focuses on the environmental issues facing Laredo and the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe.

The week-long walk titled “Bridge to the Ancestors 2023” began in Monahans in West Texas and follows a path through the Tribe’s lands to honor sacred sites, bring awareness to the destruction of those lands from extractive industries, reach out to affected communities, and share Tribal history and stories with youth from their elders.

“RGISC is proud to uplift and host the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas in Laredo as they share their experiences fighting SpaceX, the border wall, and the construction of liquified natural gas facilities on their sacred sites,” said RGISC Climate and Water Outreach Officer, Lauro Martinez.

COMMISSION SHIFT is a non-partisan non-profit reforming oil and gas oversight in Texas by building public support to hold the Texas Railroad Commission to its mission.
