“The artists are located in different cities but are all native to South Texas. Five of our AIR artists are native to Laredo but are now based in other cities,” said Maritza Bautista, exhibition curator and residency mentor. “Place communicates. It defines the interconnectedness between people, space, and objects. In the case of this exhibition, the artists’ place is within their own artwork. It is what determines how much they were willing to push their ideas, research, and materials to create their artwork during their residencies,” Bautista added.

Cultivarte Laredo is a program of Daphne Art Foundation that has been fostering a supportive culture for artists the past two years by cultivating ideas, reimagining artist spaces, and transforming the community through opportunities for artists including residencies, grants, and exhibitions. The Foundation currently hosts two artists-in-residencies, a virtual residency, and a studio residency and features local artists on its social media platforms. Bautista is the Foundation’s executive director.

The Daphne Art Foundation is an arts nonprofit organization whose mission is to support and promote the creation, presentation, study, and appreciation of the visual, performing, and media art in Laredo. “Place/d: Colocados en Contexto” is presented with support from the Visual Arts department at Texas A&M International University.

The exhibition is free and open to the public.
