Laredo Poet Laureate Rosa María Ceballos de Llano will host “Write Poetry Laredo,” a community workshop for local poets to capture la vida fronteriza in words.

The workshop, which will be held Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Laredo Public Library, culminates with the publication of a book of the best poems selected and a public reading.

The event opens with the reading of poems authored by other borderland poets, including three by Alberto Rios — “The Border,” “Border Boy,” and “Border Lines/ Líneas Fronterizas” — as well as the work of Javier Zamora, and Gloria Anzaldúa.

Poets from Laredo who have written about the border will read from their work at the workshop, including Raquel Valle Sentíes, Gilberto Quezada, Beatriz Ceja, Armando X. López, Dr. Patricia González, and Ceballos de Llano.

Workshop participants will write a poem focused on “To live in the Borderlands means….” Their work will be considered for publication in the anthology Ceballos de Llano is planning. Editors of the publication will be Malena Charur, Dr. Patricia Gonzalez, Mando and Mary Lou López, and Roxanne Garza. Proceeds from sales of the anthology will go to a non-profit organization or to scholarships.

Those unable to attend the workshop can do so virtually at https://www.laredolibrary.org/write-poetry-laredo/
