L. Vish Viswanath has announced his candidacy for City Council District 6 in the upcoming November 8 election.
The candidate is the co-founder of the watchdog group, Our Laredo, which has consistently researched, tracked, and raised numerous concerns about City business over the past several years. Members of the group, including Viswanath, often voice their concerns before the City Council.
He came to Laredo in 1995 when TAMIU was being built. He fondly recalls his role in setting up the technological needs of the new campus. Since 2005 he has been a successful small business owner serving the packaging and shipping needs of Laredo.
“As a Council member, water and taxes will be my top priority issues,” he said. “I am very concerned about the amount of money that will be required to fix the City’s aged water infrastructure. It concerns me, too, that for the 27 years I have been part of this community, no City Council has had the vision to take action on a secondary water source. We need trained and qualified personnel to provide all of Laredo with good, clean water. Ever-increasing taxes need to be controlled, and so does the unnecessary funding of the pet projects of Council members, both of which feed the need for more and more tax dollars. We need to stop the inappropriate spending of tax dollars,” he said.
Viswanath said he has no self-interest in becoming a City Council member, and that good government comes about when citizens play a role in the decision-making process.
