Cousins Hector Cruz and Juan Gonzalez have opened an inviting outdoor dining venue on Hwy. 83 in San Ygnacio.
Considering the limited food choices and eateries in the beautiful little town 36 miles down river from Laredo, Cruz and Gonzalez – best friends since childhood and recently retired from trucking – decided to develop the corner lot they own on Hwy. 83 and Washington Street into a restaurant.
“We named it La Herradura for good luck. It rained the day we opened and that felt pretty lucky,” Cruz said
Since they opened August 15 they have kept the menu simple to sirloin and brisket tacos and homemade cheese burgers, but they have plans to soon add platos de carne asada, pollo con calabaza, picadillo, and grilled chicken.
Their flour tortillas, the handiwork of Gonzalez, who says he allows no witnesses to his craft, are an evocative throwback to the best ones you’ve ever eaten.
The place is impeccably clean.
La Herradura opens from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. For orders to go call (956) 750-3337.
The partners are looking forward to the upcoming hunting season. “We’ll be stocking deer corn here,” Gonzalez said, adding that there is a plan in the works to open a tire repair shop and a car wash behind the restaurant.
