The Rio Grande International Study Center (RGISC) is partnering once more with Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPW) to host their annual Post-Easter Blitz Cleanup at Lake Casa Blanca on Tuesday, April 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Volunteers from four high school JROTC programs have confirmed their participation — Lyndon B. Johnson High School, United South High School, Martin High School, and Cigarroa High School.
Over 150 volunteers are expected to participate at this year’s effort to help TPW staff restore the park to a more pristine condition.
Thousands of people visit Lake Casa Blanca for the Easter weekend, leaving behind thousands of pounds of trash and debris in open sight, some of it that makes its way into the lake and its wildlife ecosystem.
According to TPW, Lake Casa Blanca has provided water recreation for the South Texas area for more than 50 years. The lake’s 1,680 surface acres are an impoundment of the waters ofChacon Creek, a tributary of the Río Grande. The preservation of the lake and its resident wildlife habit tie directly into RGISC’s mission of protecting the Río Grande and its watershed through awareness and stewardship for the benefit of present and future generations.
RGISC will provide lunch and all equipment for the cleanup, including work gloves, litter pickers, vests, and other tools. Southern Distributing Co. and Pizza Hut Inc. are providing refreshments and lunch.
