The Laredo Center for the Arts cordially invites the community to the March 4 welcoming reception and exhibition of the work of artist Ana Laura Hernández, which is titled Code Switching. The event begins at 6 p.m. at the LC4A at 500 San Agustin Avenue.

Marie Antoinette and the mis-attributed phrase “Let them eat cake” are the focus of this series.

Native Laredoan Hernández is a graduate of United High School South and the University of Texas-San Antonio at which she earned a degree in painting with a minor in art history.

She has exhibited her work regionally and internationally and has completed numerous public art projects in San Antonio and Nuevo Laredo.

Fractured images of femininity, pop culture, and regional icons populate Hernández’s paintings. She draws from her experiences as a first generation American and mother in a contemporary culture.

“Inspired by the overtly saccharine images of Rococo and the many interpretations of the iconic French royal throughout the centuries, I created familiar portraits with modern twists that push common misconceptions of the queen, and femininity, to the point of absurdity,” Hernández explained, adding, “Having been born and raised on the U.S.-Mexico border, my work is suffused with motifs from American and Mexican pop culture and art history. By fluidly combining these elements I present a layered carnivalesque atmosphere underscored by textures and a wide palette of colors.”

Hernåndez is the second artist in the Laredo Center for the Arts Acquisition Project: Exhibition Series by local and regional artists.

The LC4A will host an Artist Talk with Hernández on Saturday, March 5, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Center. Her work will be on display through April 1.
