On the first anniversary of the storming of our Capitol by crazed Trump supporters, egged on by a demented narcissist who still thinks he won by a landslide, what have we learned about the justice system?
Over 100 Republican Congressman planned the attack and 140 of them voted to overturn the election results. Some wrote legal briefs on how to overthrow a peaceful transfer of power. It was a well funded and coordinated conspiracy to negate the will of 81 million voters who decided to end a four-year dictatorship. The chief instigator ordered the mob to storm the Capitol and promised he would be marching along with them. The rest, as they say, is history.
Up to now, over 720 people from 45 states in the union have been charged with various felonies and misdemeanors. Over 80 military members, active or retired, took part in the attack on democracy. Over 13% of the mob have ties to law enforcement, state and federal. Over 1,000 assaults on federal officers protecting the capital have been counted. The fools who blindly obeyed the president are now paying the price, but the chief plotters are cowering in the shadows, ignoring lawful subpoenas to appear before a Congressional committee to explain their role in the insurrection. The now private citizen ex-president is ordering everyone to ignore the subpoenas, citing dubious executive privilege claims. Obstruction of justice, anyone?
It is apparent that our law is not equal justice before the law, but special protection to criminals associated with the twice impeached 45th president. Will the local Republican leader explain the actions of Republican Senators and Congressman in helping cover up the most shocking coup attempt in modern times? Why are they still quaking in their boots at the alleged billionaire Mar A Lago, Russian aided Don? The committee needs to turn over their findings to a D.C. grand jury and issue indictments if the evidence warrants them.
The former president was only interested in enriching his organization. He and his family made millions off the US taxpayers and there are some people that still want him back? He relies on adulation and the ignorance of his base. He still spews hatred against anyone who stands up to him. He will never change. He will only get worse. His vocabulary is very limited. “Disgraceful, Witch hunt” and “Fake news” are his favorite go-to terms. For a man who yelled, “Lock Her Up!” for years against Secretary Clinton, his countless pardons of his closest cronies who were actually locked up is hypocritical and ironic. May justice prevail.
