Theater productions are back at Laredo College with the spring opera production of “H.M.S. Pinafore.”
The Laredo College Visual and Performing Arts Department will bring the production’s humorous characters to life in the March 2022 presentation, and to that end is looking for talented actors and singers to join the opera musical.
Auditions will be held by appointment only on Dec. 8 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. No experience is necessary to audition, but the person should possess singing or acting abilities, problem-solving skills, and a team player skillset. The department is looking for about 20 male and female actors and singers 16 years of age and older.
The play is set on the H.M.S Pinafore in the British Royal Navy. The captain’s daughter, Josephine, is in love with a lower-class sailor, Ralph Rackshaw. Her father, however, has plans to wed her to the First Lord of the Royal Admiralty, Sir Joseph Porter. She agrees to her father’s wishes, but Sir Joseph points out that in marriage, both parties are on equal footing. The plan backfires and encourages Josephine and the young sailor to plan to escape. When the captain finds out about the plan and tries to prevent it, secrets come to light that tip the board and resets people into place for the unexpected. A delightful comic happy ending transpires.
Prepared songs are encouraged but not required for auditions. Selected scenes will be provided for those auditioning to read and sing. The performers should wear clothes that allow them to move freely during their audition.
The director will make the final selection with the advice of other professionals. The selected cast members will be required to enroll in the Opera Musical Theatre course at Laredo College. Those who register for the 2022 spring semester will only be paying fees since the institution will provide a tuition discount. Scholarships and payment plans are also available.
Classes for the course begin Jan. 18 and will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Rehearsals will be held throughout the week.
