From a humble corner along the railroad tracks in District 8, hard-working Gigi Ramos has for decades been helping Laredo-Webb County U.S. armed service veterans, and their surviving spouses, through Volunteers Serving the Need (VSTN), the non-profit she established.
Located at 1202 Salinas, VSTN currently serves more than 300 veterans with a food pantry and many other needs that face Laredo veterans who served. The operation includes a thrift store that raises funds by selling donated housewares, furniture, and clothing.
In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has placed a strain on the fundraisers of many non-profits over the last two years — including Volunteers Serving the Need — Ramos has launched a fundraiser drawing to raise $15,000. Tickets are $100 for the Holiday Raffle, which is set for Dec. 18 at 10 a.m.
Six “gold” prizes will be given away. First prize is $5,000; second, $1,000; and additional prizes of $500, $250, $150, and $100.
Ramos noted that only 150 tickets will be sold, adding, “Your chances are way better than any lottery.”
The ticket imprint reads, “Funds donated by one individual who loves, God, the USA, and Veterans.”
For tickets call the VSTN office at (956) 717- 2960 or Salo Otero and JoAnn Piland Otero at (956) 324-2431 or 285-1925.
