The Laredo Rotary Club honors the late newscaster Dave Leyendecker with a golf tournament fundraiser Oct. 16 at Casa Blanca Golf Course.
Leyendecker, a longtime Laredo newsman with KGNS when the station was around the corner from the old Hamilton Hotel and within a block of another news-gathering organization, The Laredo Times, which was located at the corner of Matamoros and Juarez.
The Rotary Club met at noon at the Hamilton’s Maya Room where member Leyendecker opened the meeting with “today’s noon news briefs.”
He anchored KGNS afternoon and evening newscasts, signing off with, “My time is up, thank you for yours.” His career included stints of sports radio play-by-play as well as being sports editor at The Times.
The Laredo Rotary Club has a long history of supporting local programs such as youth scholarships and non-profit organizations. Dave Leyendecker helped with his “grain of salt.”
