The United Independent School District will soon open the best and most modern aquatic center south of San Antonio. It will seat 800 fans and have room for 600 contestants.
No official name yet, but how about naming it the Carroll Summers Aquatic Center?
Top three reasons (there are more) for proposing the name of Carroll Summers:
- He is a longtime Laredoan who was United ISD school board president when swimming was introduced in the late 1970s-early 80s. He was meet director for AAU swimming meets at the old downtown Civic Center Pool.
- The historic Border Olympics is talking about “diving” into a swimming meet event. The discussion was positive at a recent Border Olympics board meeting when UISD athletic director Bobby Cruz shared news of the aquatic center opening. Summers has a five-decade history with Border Olympics as a former board president and volunteer.
- He is not new to the swimming pool and its lifestyle value. He was a four-year letterman at the prestigious military school, The Citadel, in Charleston, South Carolina. His son Robert often recalls, “Dad always says, ‘A student must know two things in life: Read and Swim’.”
You can say Carroll Summers has his feet rather wet in swimming and community contributions to Laredo worthy of an aquatic center namesake.
Name it Carroll Summers Aquatic Center.
Amen. If you agree, share this with the UISD school board and administration.
Yes, Carroll Summers is well deserved of this honor.
