Laredo College President Dr. Ricardo J. Solis has accepted the presidency of South Texas College in the Rio Grande Valley. His decision to accept the position was made during a press conference on Thursday, May 27.

Solis’ five-year tenure as the college’s seventh president focused on health sciences, technology, and a myriad of strategic partnerships and initiatives aimed at workforce expansion, economic development, and skills training.

“Together, we have accomplished the extraordinary at Laredo College over the last five years,” Solis said. “We have engineered an innovative transformation of this institution that has initiated new programs, improved existing programs, and made our operations even more efficient and effective. I leave with the certainty that Laredo College will continue thriving and living up to its reputation of academic excellence and innovation.”

As the first and largest institution of higher education in Laredo and Webb County, Laredo College has remained an integral part of our community for over seven decades, bridging the gap to meet the educational and workforce demand in the flourishing border region.

Over the past year, the college has garnered prestigious awards and accolades, including recognition as the #1 Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Program in the United States, the #1 college in Texas with the lowest graduate debt, and, most significantly, the school’s designation as the #1 community college in Texas.

Laredo College Board President Lupita Zepeda said the college is grateful to President Solis for his five years of service and wishes him the best in this new chapter of his career.

“On behalf of the Laredo College Board of Trustees, we want to wish Dr. Ricardo Solis the very best as he transitions to become the new President of South Texas College,” she said. “We sincerely appreciate his hard work in support of our college mission and our students. His impact on our institution will be felt within our college and in our community for years to come.”

The college board president also noted that the focus is to ensure a smooth transition, overseeing the formation of a committee to begin the search for a new college president, and naming an interim president.
