Eight local organizations have been named recipients of the Prairie Foundation’s grants for humanitarian and artistic efforts in the community. The announcement of the Foundation’s 24th annual awards, which will be held on Thursday, October 29 at 10 a.m.in the Phillip V Ballroom of La Posada, was made by Fasken Oil and Ranch.

This year’s grants, which total $100,000, go to eight organizations that serve humanity and make a difference in the lives of Laredo and Webb County residents. They are the Diocese of Laredo; Angel of Hope – Posada En El Barrio; the South Texas Food Bank; the Rio Grande International Study Center; the Boys and Girls Club of Laredo; Volunteers Serving the Need; Casa Misericordia; and the Border Olympics

Thursday’s ceremony has been adjusted to meet the health and safety protocols of the pandemic. One member of each organization will be present to receive their award.

The Prairie Foundation was established in 1957 by David Fasken to provide a means of supporting non-profit charitable and educational organizations through an annual grant-giving program. The Foundation expanded its geographic scope in 1997 to include Laredo, a city much loved by the late Barbara Fasken, who was the Foundation’s president. Since that time, The Prairie Foundation has given $1,360,000 to 49 organizations in Laredo. Thursday’s awards move the total to $1,460,000. In 2016, the Foundation increased its grant awards in Laredo from $50,000 to $100,000.
