Justin has announced his candidacy for the Laredo College (LC) board Place 7.
He will face Lino E. Sanchez, José R. Villa, Valentin Escamilla, Ricardo “Rick” Gonzalez, and Karina “Kari” Elizondo in the November 3 General Election.
Hundsnurscher Casiano’s background includes 14 years in public education, presently as a high school career and technical teacher.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business, an Associate of Arts degree in criminal justice, and various certifications in technology, business, and finance.
“Education opens doors to better opportunities, whether it is a degree, certification in technical/vocational programs, or workforce training. Laredo College is the key to opening those doors,” he said.
As a high school teacher, he said, he sees first-hand the needs of students transitioning to college. “We need to ensure that every student who wants any form of continuing education is able to obtain their dream. Everyone benefits – the student, their family, and our overall community. All of the stakeholders of LC matter – students, faculty, staff, and taxpayers. I will be an active board member sponsoring agenda items that strengthen our college and the community,” he said, adding, “As the official governing body of LC, the board of trustees have a duty to ensure that hard-earned taxpayer dollars are invested wisely.”
Hundsnurscher Casiano said he has introduced a proposal called the Palomino Promise, an initiative that offers tuition-free programs and certifications at LC for all graduating high school students. He explained, “The program would be funded through philanthropy and private and public donations with no cost to taxpayers. It would benefit LC students and the local economy. It would cover any outstanding tuition amount that is not covered through grants or financial aid.”
Other of his platform issues include expanding opportunities for working adults to obtain their education through online-only courses; supporting continuing education for special needs population; expanding the athletics program for local students; increasing faculty and staff morale; and holding virtual town hall meetings to hear the public’s needs and ideas.
“I believe in education over politics and in making our community stronger through the educational institution of LC,“ Hundsnurscher Casiano said.
