Three City Council incumbents will seek re-election in the Tuesday, Nov. 3 General Election.
They are District IV member Albert Torres, Webb County public information officer for the Pct. 1 constable; District V member Nelly Vielma, an attorney; and District VIII member Roberto Balli, also an attorney.
As yet, Torres does not have an opponent.
In the race for District V, Vielma will face off with business owner George M. Beckelhymer; restaurateur Celestino Marina; and Ruben A. Gutierrez Jr., a Laredo Police officer and a business owner.
The heavily populated field of candidates for District VII, which is being vacated by Council member George J. Altgelt, has a lineup of nine candidates.
They are USMC veteran and USBP agent Benigno G. Cepeda; retired banker and former Laredo Mayor Betty Flores; engineer and construction company owner Jacob Carlos Flores; former Nixon High School advanced placement government and political science instructor David Montes; Webb County administrative assistant Priscilla Pantoja; Webb County probation officer Hector Lee Patiño; educator Vanessa J. Perez; international trade transportation and logistics company owner José A. Renteria; and former university government and public administration instructor María Antonieta Reyes.
District VIII member Balli will face two challengers — medical supply company employee José Sergio Dorantes and community activist Alyssa Cigarroa.
According to the Webb County Elections office, voters 65 and older or with disabilities can apply at any time for a ballot by mail. The first day to apply for a regular ballot by mail is September 4 and the last day is October 23 (received at P.O. Box 233.) The last day to register to vote is Oct. 5.
Early voting begins Oct. 13 and continues through Oct. 30. The last day to receive a ballot by mail is November 3.
