The Webb County Heritage Foundation, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico in Laredo, will present “Malintzin,” a dramatized documentary film on Friday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the patio of the Border Heritage Museum at 810 Zaragoza St. The film is in Spanish and contains some mature content.
Seating will be provided, and the audience is invited to bring food and refreshments.
Five hundred years ago, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés and his men landed in Mexico, catalyzing one of the most historically influential campaigns of Spanish colonialism. The documentary Malintzin, la historia de un enigma (Malitzin, the story of an enigma) by Fernando González Sitges portrays the contributions of Doña Marina, Malintzin, Malinche as a translator and a fundamental character in the conquest and in the creation of miscegenation in Mexico.
As an involuntary ally and then the lover of Hernán Cortés, Malinche’s image has been stigmatized and converted over the centuries: it is a contrasting symbol. In the popular culture of Mexico, an image of a traitor was forged of her that even caused the term “malinchismo” to be coined as a synonym for treason; but for some international scholars and historians, La Malinche is a symbol of diplomacy and historic preservation.
Fernando González Sitges is a biologist specializing in zoology. He is an experienced documentarist who has traveled the five continents recording the wildest species and corners of the planet. He has also ventured into the fields of historical documentary, directing, and writing. His filmography has more than 180 works.
