Webb County Pct. 2 Commissioner Wawi Tijerina, Webb County Pct. 4 Commissioner Cindy Liendo, Habitat for Humanity of Laredo, and Webb County staff members are preparing for the upcoming annual Women’s Build Day event, which is set for Saturday, March 7, at 501 Ansel in the Tierra Prometida Subdivision just off U.S. Hwy. 359.

Onsite registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

Women Build Day kicks off Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build Week, March 1 to 8, which invites women to devote at least one day to help families build strength, stability, and independence through housing. The week is meant to spotlight the homeownership challenges faced by women.

“As representatives of two of the neediest precincts in Webb County we are personally grateful to all the bighearted contributors as well as volunteers who so generously give of themselves to participate in our event each year,” said Commissioner Tijerina.

The event reinforces Habitat for Humanity’s message that every woman can make a difference by learning and using construction skills to build stability and self-reliance through shelter. More than 117,000 women from all 50 states have volunteered in the 11 previous National Women Build Week.

Habitat for Humanity has partnered with Lowe’s since 2003. The company has committed more than $71.1million to support the nonprofit’s impact on the lives of Habitat homeowners worldwide. Lowe’s support of Habitat’s Women Build has helped build, renovate, or repair more than 5,325 homes with the support of more than 138,000 women volunteers.

During Women Build Week, Habitat for Humanity International, Lowe’s, and approximately 6,000 women volunteers will unite in more than 235 communities in the United States, India, and Canada for International Women Build Week to highlight the global need for safe and affordable housing. The global event aims to build and repair nearly 540 homes while raising awareness of housing issues facing women and their families.

Habitat and Lowe’s provide the tools for women to empower and educate themselves with skills for repairing and restoring homes. By using the hashtag #BuildHer to share inspirational stories, experiences, and ways to positively impact communities, Habitat and Lowe’s unite women for a central goal of encouraging and building each other up.

According to volunteer services coordinator Lizeth Perez, volunteers are welcome, even those without construction skills or experience. To sign up for this year’s project and Habitat’s training course, volunteers can contact her or Hector Santos at (956) 724-3227 or go to volunteerservices@habitatlaredo.org.
