The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and the Webb-Zapata-Jim Hogg Medical Society will host the two-day 35th Annual Update in Medicine Conference on Friday, October 25, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the UT Health Regional Campus at 1937 Bustamante.

The annual program has served the medical community in Webb and surrounding counties for over 34 years and is designed to provide continuing education opportunities for all practicing providers in the region. This program brings to the community the most current information regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention methods for numerous illnesses that affect area residents.

One of the keynote speakers is Dr. Jaime Fergie, Director of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, who will present an update on Measles. Dr. Fergie has published over 60 articles and presented in national and international settings on pediatric infectious diseases and vaccines.

Dr. Mario Gutierrez, board certified in family medicine and wound care, will present on the Obesity Epidemic and will share best practice methods for treating those afflicted.

The two-day conference includes renowned speakers on an array of topics that include heart disease, infectious diseases, nutrition, mental health, spine disorders, pain management, medical ethics, and others.

The conference setting will promote networking among health care providers and other service providers whose shared goal is to maintain a healthy community through quality health care services. The program is the only one of its kind in the region that offers multidisciplinary education and up to 13 hours of continuing education for physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses, nurse practitioners, dietitians, counselors, and social workers. Medical, nursing, and health professions students are also invited to attend.

“This educational setting is really for the community. Linking educational resources to the practicing providers and students is important,” remarked Julie Bazan, AHEC executive director.
