In honor of Pride Month, the Laredo Film Society will host a screening of The Birdcage on Friday, June 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Gallery 201, 513 San Bernardo Avenue.

The hit 1996 comedy is about a gay cabaret owner and his partner, a drag queen.

The pair pretends to be straight so that their son can introduce them to his fiancée’s right wing parents.

The film — which stars Robin Williams, Gene Hackman, Nathan Lane, and Diane Wiest — won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) praised the film for “going beyond the stereotypes to see the characters’ depth and humanity. The film celebrates differences and points out the outrageousness of hiding those differences.”

The screening will be followed by performances by local drag queens, as well as a set by local musician, DJ Angustia.

Tickets are $10. To purchase, please visit bit.ly/LFS-PRIDE.
