The 11th Annual Shoot for the Stars benefit Sporting Clay Tournament is set for Saturday, May 11 at the South Texas Shooting Complex. The event begins at 8 a.m. and continues to 2 p.m.
Registration is $125 per shooter on a five-person team. The fee for a team of five is $625. The competition is open to women, men, and youth 12 to 17 years of age. The course is 12 shooting stations with 100 sporting clays. The top prize for the top shooter is $500. There will be door prizes and raffles for shotguns. Awards will be made during lunch.
All proceeds raised in the National Sporting Clays Association-registered tournament benefit the Webb County Better Community Foundation (WCBCF), a non-profit corporation created by District Attorney Isidro R. Alaniz to build longstanding relationships with community members and to support services, activities, and assistance to youth in the areas of education, mental health, overall wellness, and various therapies.
The WCBCF has provided opportunities through endowments to more than 60 local schools and charitable organizations including Laredoans Against Drunk Driving, Volunteers Serving the Need, and Habitat for Humanity.
The WCBCF’s greatest endeavor has been to create academic collegiate scholarships for students who wish to pursue a college degree. To date 36 students from Laredo and Zapata have received $1,000 each to pursue formal higher education.
Over the last 11 years, Shoot for the Stars has helped numerous organizations, including the 4H Club, Make A Wish Foundation, Casa de Misericordia, and the Ruthe B. Cowl Rehabilitation Center.
DA Alaniz said the foundation is appreciative of individuals and businesses that have signed on as sponsors of the annual event. “We encourage others to join us as sponsors and shooters,” he said.
