In response to President Trump’s Feb. 15 declaration of a national emergency for the entire Southern Border and the allocation of billions of dollars to fund construction of a wall throughout all of Laredo, Webb County, Zapata County, and other places along the border, a local coalition launches its opposition to the wall at a press conference at Tres Laredos Park on Thursday, March 14 at 9:30 a.m.
The media and all Laredoans are invited to hear the voices of business owners, landowners, ranchers, government officials, educators, and environmentalists who are opposed to the wall.
The Where’s the National Emergency coalition is comprised of concerned citizens and local organizations that include the Sisters of Mercy, Cesar Chavez Memorial Alliance of South Texas, Laredo Immigrant Alliance, LULAC, MOVE, Rio Grande International Study Center, Webb County Young Democrats, and others.
Tricia Cortez, one of the organizers of the event, stated, “We live in some of the safest and most economically dynamic cities in the country, cities like Laredo, Brownsville, Del Rio, El Paso, and McAllen. Millions of us rely on the Rio Grande as our only source of drinking water. We oppose this declaration in principle and plan to share the ways in which we believe this National Emergency to be an unnecessary, destructive, and unconstitutional declaration.”
