El Capataz, in collaboration with Laredo artist Gil Rocha-Rochelli, will unveil Cocinando Recuerdos, a mural inspired by traditional depictions of culture merged with colorful abstractions on Thursday, March 7, at the restaurant at 7220 Bob Bullock Loop, C-7.
Rocha-Rochelli, an art instructor and an artist whose work is respected and well known in and outside of Laredo, teaches at the Vidal M. Treviño School of Fine Arts. His work recently formed part of two major Texas exhibitions, “The Texas Biennial” (2017) in Austin and “Trans-Border Biennial” (2018) at The El Paso Museum of Art and El Museo de Arte en Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
Last summer, Rocha-Rochelli curated the prestigious “Young Latino Artists 23” exhibition hosted by the Mexi-Arte Museum in Austin. His art practice continues in and outside of his studio, creating works that encompass a spectrum of techniques and concepts ranging from works for gallery or museum exhibitions, to public works like murals and sculptures.
Rocha-Rochelli is a board member of the Laredo Center for the Arts.
Born and raised in Laredo, he earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas in San Antonio (1999) and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2006).
