Floyd Clown Sr., a descendant of Lakota warrior Crazy Horse, and author William Matson will speak at the Joe A. Guerra Laredo Public Library on Tuesday, January 22, to discuss Crazy Horse: The Lakota Warrior’s Life and Legacy.

The book, which is based on the family’s oral history of the famous Lakota warrior, marks the first time in over a century that their story has been told to the public.

According to the Barnes and Noble website, members of the Edward Clown family, nearest living relatives to the Lakota war leader, present the family tales and memories of their famous grandfather, as told to them.

The Clown family’s oral history, the site states, differs from what has become the standard and widely accepted biography of Crazy Horse. The family’s version “clarifies the inaccuracies and shares their story about the past, including what it means to them to be Lakota, the family genealogy, the life of Crazy Horse and his motivations, his death, and why they chose to keep quiet with their knowledge for so long before finally deciding to tell the truth as they know it.”

Floyd Clown is the grandson of Edward Clown, the son of Crazy Horse’s sister, Iron Cedar, and Amos Clown.

William Matson is a documentary filmmaker who has known the Clown family since 2001. This is his first published work. Carrying forward the work that his late father Emerson began on the subject, William Matson produced a four-part oral history documentary entitled The Authorized Oral History of Crazy Horse and His Family.

Laredoans are invited to the discussion and book signing from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the library’s multi-purpose room.
