Gringo Barrio will perform Friday, October 26, at Siete Banderas to benefit the Sames Scholars mentorship program at Texas A&M International University.

For reservations and ticket information, call (956) 763-9960 or 206-1121. Siete Banderas is located at 901 Iturbide.

The Sames Scholars Endowment Fund was established by Hank and Elizabeth Sames in 2001 for the purpose of promoting first-generation university studies for underprivileged students of United Independent School District (UISD).

Each year eight promising incoming UISD sophomores are selected for the Sames Scholars program.

Students are paired with a TAMIU faculty member, who meet with their protégés several times a year throughout the students’ high school careers to monitor academic progress, advise on curriculum planning, and discuss possible fields of study. The faculty mentors also lend a sympathetic ear, and offer praise when it is deserved and encouragement when needed.

Participating Sames Scholars students who maintain a certain grade point average and attendance record throughout their remaining high school years will receive a scholarship of $4,000 per year for four years to help cover a large portion of their tuition and fees at TAMIU.

ABOUT GRINGO BARRO

Three of the band’s members had their musical beginnings growing up in Laredo — Hank Sames, Mike Jackson, and Richard (Sparky) Miller. Sames and Miller are songwriters and vocalists. Jackson plays guitar and sings.

Chip Dolan plays keyboards and accordion. Craig Calvert plays guitar and sings. Joe Resnick plays drums, and Boo Resnick plays bass.

The band formed in 2013, releasing its first album in the same year. Gringo Barrio has fashioned a sound that captures the rhythm of the borderlands.
