The 34thAnnual Update in Medicine Conference, which is sponsored by the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and the Webb-Zapata-Jim Hogg Medical Society, is scheduled for Friday, October 26, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the UT Health Regional Campus at 1937 Bustamante.
The annual event provides continuing education opportunities for all practicing health providers in the region and brings the community the most current information regarding diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of numerous illnesses. The working conference also promotes networking among health care providers and other service providers who share the goal of keeping area residents healthy.
The event is the only two-day program of its kind in the region — offering multidisciplinary education and up to 14 hours of continuing education for physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses, nurse practitioners, dietitians, counselors, and social workers.
The program for the Annual Update, which is developed by physicians, nurses, and others who are part of the conference planning committee, begins to take shape early in the year to ensure that the topics for the conference program will benefit the medical community, future health care providers and community members who are interested in the latest health findings.
Presentations in the 34th Annual Update include Functional and Restorative Neurosurgery by Dr. Sohum K. Desai; Alzheimer’s Disease and Neuropsychology by Dr. Eduardo Estevis; Cell Phone Addiction by Dr. Roberto Jimenez; Diagnosis and Management of Dementia by Dr. Mitzi Gonzales; Diabetes by Dr. Curtis Triplitt; Kidney Transplant by Dr. Philip Thomas; Spinal Cord Injuries by Dr. Amol Utturkar; Food Allergies by Dr. Jane Unzeitig; Addictive Behavioral Disorders by Dr. Joseph J. Martinez-O’Hara; and numerous others.
“The annual conference is part of AHEC’s goal to meet its mission of linking health professionals to educational resources and providers for continuing education credits to meet licensure requirements,” said Julie Bazan, AHEC executive director. “Our continued partnerships with the Laredo-Webb County Medical society and health care institutions, make this a very relevant program for the health providers of the regional community,” she continued, adding that medical, nursing, and health professions students are welcome to attend.
