The Rio Grande International Study Center (RGISC) and the City of Laredo will host an inaugural “Run with the Monarchs,” Laredo’s first 5K/10K race on October 13 at the Chacon Hike and Bike Trails. The run and walk, which begin at 8 a.m., include a 10K run, 5K run, 5K walk, and an 800-yard kids fun run.
The morning event will present an important opportunity to bring awareness and support for the disappearing Monarch butterfly population, which has plummeted by nearly 90 percent.
The event will also include the establishment of a Monarch butterfly garden at the Haynes Health and Wellness Center at 2102 Clarks Crossing Drive, and Monarch-dedicated interactive stations for all ages. The garden will feature a number of host and nectar plants for the Monarch.
The demonstration garden, which will be planted by the city’s horticulture and urban agriculture division, is possible thanks to a USDA grant.
The interactive stations will offer information to the public about the lifecycle of the species, its amazing migration, and guidance on how to plant milkweed and nectar plants that greatly benefit the Monarch and help to increase its population.
This event will provide members of the community various options for doing their part to help bring back this delicate species from the brink of extinction.
“The Monarch butterfly, known as la gran viajera, is in trouble,” said RGISC Executive Director Tricia Cortez. “Scientists say that it could disappear in 20 years’ time if we don’t do something now to ensure its survival,” she added.
“We encourage runners, walkers, families, gardeners, and nature hobbyists – to join us for this unique event and to participate in the interactive Monarch stations to learn more about this butterfly and how to help save it,” Cortez added.
She thanked District II Council member Vidal Rodriguez for his support of the walk and run, City staff, Flavio Garza of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and sponsors of the event.
