TAMIU professor of psychology Dr. Gilberto Salinas will keynote October 3’s annual conference for Teens Against Domestic Violence. The topics of his presentation are depression, bullying, suicide, and domestic violence.
The seventh annual event, which is sponsored by the Webb County Domestic Violence Coalition, is set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the UT Health Science Center at 1937 Bustamante.
The focus of the conference is to create awareness in Laredo high school students about domestic violence and to inform them of the services available through various social service agencies.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in nine female teens and one in 19 male teens report having experienced physical dating violence. The CDC also reports that teens exposed to violent relationships may be at a greater risk to enter unhealthy relationships in the future.
The upcoming conference provides an opportunity for teens to speak with community leaders and law enforcement officials on their views about domestic violence.
