Students at both Laredo College and Texas A&M International University will stage debates for candidates for all city offices in the November 6 general election.
LC Debates October 3 & 4
The Office of Student Life at Laredo College will host the debate for candidates for City Council District I and II on Wednesday, October 3 in the De La Garza Building, Room 101.
The debate for District I begins at 6 p.m., and the debate for District II begins at 7:30 p.m.
Candidates for District I are incumbent Rudy Gonzalez Jr., Rogelio Benavides, and Luis A. Cisneros.
District II candidates are incumbent Vidal Rodriguez, Gabriel López, and José R. Perez III.
The October 4 debates, also in the De La Garza Building, are for District III candidates at 6 p.m. and the candidates for mayor at 7:30 p.m.
The District III candidates are Cristina Perez, Anastacio R. Barrera, Juanita Ramon, Abey Lugo, Mercurio Martinez III, and Manuel D. Osorio.
Candidates for mayor are incumbent Pete Saenz, Avelino Juarez, Roque Vela Jr., Charlie San Miguel, and Randall Walden.
TAMIU DEBATES October 11 & 12
The TAMIU Student Government Association and the Political Science Association will host a Thursday, October 11 debate for Council District VI candidates and for candidates for the mayor’s race.
The District VI debates begin at 6 p.m., and the mayor’s debate begins at 8 p.m. Both will be held in the Student Center Ballroom.
Candidates for District VI are Frank Castillo, Rafael Dueñas, Teresita McGraw, Juan Alejandro, Dr. Marte Martinez, Rick Laurel, Jorge Rodriguez, Fernando Alarcon Jr., Javier Mendoza, Vish Viswnath, and Juan Ramirez.
Candidates for mayor are listed above.
A Friday, October 12 debate for candidates for municipal court judge begins at 6 p.m. in the Student Center, Room 236.
Candidates for judge are Chuy Dominguez, Rodolfo Morales III, and Nathan Chu.
Among the panelists are Julia Wallace of the Laredo Morning Times, Tricia Cortez of the Río Grande International Study Center, Sergio Mora of Frontera Radio, students from both schools, and TAMIU political science instructor Dr. Simon Zschirnt. Attorney Louis LaVaude and Dr. John Kilburn of TAMIU will moderate the debates, which will be live streamed by Frontera Radio.
The public is invited to attend.
