LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Sean Spicer a perplexing choice for a scholarship fundraiser

I wish to commend the STARS Scholarship Fund for providing badly needed scholarships for Laredo’s college students.

I am sure the committee pored over a long list of distinguished speakers who would enlighten his or her listeners with pearls of wisdom and how to make it in this cut-throat business world or in Washington.

I am perplexed at this year’s selection, former Press Secretary Sean Spicer, who began his maiden press conference by snarling at all reporters present and repeating his boss’ outrageous falsehood that the inauguration crowd was the largest in history, period. I preferred watching Saturday Night Live’s version of Mr. Spicer which was much more entertaining and funnier and who did not lie as much.

It must have been an extremely painful job for the few months he served to invent facts and cover for his boss and for his boss’ chief toady Kelly Ann Conway. Since Mr. Spicer was the finalist in their list, I assume they overlooked Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Anthony Scaramucci, and chief propagandist Stephen Miller.

I would ask the well-heeled crowd that will attend this auspicious gala event to prepare a list of questions for Mr. Spicer, who has written a book defending his actions while serving as Trump’s Press Secretary. The list should include questions such as: At what point did you determine that your boss was a pathological liar? Why were you the only employee at the White House without Russian ties? Did you ever try to keep your boss from tweeting absurdities on a daily basis? Does your former boss really have the attention span of a two-year-old? Why is your book the only one that has come out from White House insiders that is not highly critical of the president? Why did the president allow people into the White House, knowing they would be interviewing everyone for an upcoming book, and then, after the book comes out, call it a work of fiction and call the author a liar?

Paraphrasing the title of Mr. Bob Woodward’s latest exposé, the only thing we have to Fear is Trump himself.

Sincerely,

David Almaraz
