Momentum continues to build for the upcoming Third Annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which will be held September 29 on the grounds of TAMIU.
The work of Walk co-chairs Patty Bruni and Melissa Guerra, and a corps of committed volunteers have seen to a myriad of details so that the walk — to raise funds and awareness for the devastating disease — is well attended.
“What we are striving for in this final phase of planning is to have more fundraising teams join the walk,” said Bruni. “It’s easy to establish a team online at alz.org. Team members can ask friends and family to support their effort. It’s a great way to raise funds as a group, and it is a vital revenue stream for the annual walk. We are asking banks, civic organizations, city and county departments, school clubs, local and federal law enforcement agencies to form teams and walk with us,” she added.
Volunteer Memo Salinas, who is coordinating tent sites for health care related companies and elder care providers, reports that there are still booth spaces available. He can be reached at (956) 337-8325.
Volunteers who wish to help at the September 29 Walk can call or text volunteer coordinator Juan Livas at (956) 296-2417.
In support of the 2018 Walk, Chick-fil-a at 5118 McPherson is sponsoring a Spirit Night on September 20 from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. A percentage of dine-in or take-out purchases will go to the Walk. To get a copy of the flyer to present at check-out, click on the Alzheimer’s banner at laredosnews.com
The handful of volunteers who have worked to stage the 2018 Laredo Walk to End Alzheimer’s, in addition to Bruni and Guerra, are Nydia Valdez, Memo Salinas, Gloria Rodriguez, Joe Arciniega, Lydia Gonzalez, Rebecca Guerrero, Martha L. Medina, Juan Livas, and Sergio Puente.
The two-mile walk at TAMIU begins with on-site registration at 8 a.m. followed by a brief ceremony at 9 a.m. A drum corps sets the cadence for the annual walk at 9:30 a.m.
