The Boys and Girls Club of Laredo’s newest program, a music clubhouse called the BGC Music Studio, is off to a rousing start at the Lamar Bruni Vergara Club on Los Presidentes Avenue in South Laredo.
Board member Joe Arciniega, a longtime supporter of the arts, told members at a recent quarterly board meeting that the summer pilot program has been launched for children ages 6 to 12. “The children are learning to read and play basic music. It’s all tied to pop music,” he observed.
Hector Noyola, Boys and Girls Club executive director, noted that a $5,000 grant from Laredo Gateway Rotary fostered the project, which is directed by Laredoan Jose Villa, a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston. “School districts are not providing this kind of program for this age group,” Noyola said.
