The City of Laredo and Habitat for Humanity are co-hosting the Family Freedom Festival July 7 at the Max Mandel Municipal Golf Course on the Mines Road (27700 Mines Road).

The all-day outdoor event is open and free to the public and includes a Habitat for Humanity fundraiser, the Second Annual Hottest Golf Tournament in Texas; a yoga class-nature walk; family walk and run; drone race; a Battle of the Bands; a fireworks display; concession stands; and an opportunity to experience the riparian beauty and wildlife habitat of the Río Grande upriver from Laredo.

“This post-Fourth of July Independence Day celebration benefits Habitat’s Veterans Program to build or rehabilitate the homes of Laredo veterans,” said District VII City Council member George Altgelt, who has worked to plan the event with City staff and Habitat’s executive director Carol Sherwood. “What better way to express our appreciation for their service than coming together to give veterans a hand?” Altgelt added.

The Second Annual Hottest Golf Tournament in Texas is a three-man scramble that has an 8 a.m. tee time. Registration begins at 7 a.m. The fee is $125 per player and includes breakfast and lunch.

“We are actively seeking sponsorships for this worthwhile event,” said Sherwood. Sponsorship levels are $5,000 (Platinum), $2,500 (Diamond), $1,500 (Gold), $1,000 (Silver), $750 (Bronze), and $500 (Nickel). Hole sponsorships are also available.

The yoga class and nature walk begins at 9 a.m.

The Family Fun Run, a 5K run and a 1K Walk, begins at 6:30 p.m. There is a fee of $25 per team of five in two divisions – family and law enforcement.

The drone race is from 7 p.m. to 7:45. There is an entry fee of $20.

The Battle of the Bands, which is open to all amateur bands, is from 8 p.m. to 10.

The fireworks display begins at 10 p.m.
